AUTUMN SONG
“Whirling Realms” („Ringlemisi"), a musical performance based on Veljo Tormis' music, was born in cooperation between the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and concert organisation Eesti Kontsert in order to celebrate the composer’s 90th anniversary.
Teet Kask: “I discovered that the music of Tormis has the capacity to touch the different layers of what makes us human. There are four distinct seasons in our geographical location, which shape our relationship with nature. On the other hand, human life with birth, youth, action and death are part of the timeless universe. Those rhythms of nature and cycles of life are in continuous circling.”
Performed by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, the musical performance includes well-known choral works by Veljo Tormis: “St. John’s Day Songs”, “Litany to Thunder”, “Autumn Landscapes,” “Northern Lights”, “Childhood Memory” (“Herding Calls”), “Ingrian Evenings”, etc. Lesser known vocal works by Tormis – “Four Fragments”, “A Bunch of Stars”, “Three Flowers” and “Sorrowful moments” – are performed by Liisi Koikson.
Kaspars Putniņš: “The vocal miniatures performed by the soloist reflect the intimate and personal world of a human being, whilst the choral works depict the universal. Albeit the works of Tormis are recognisably Estonian, they are also archetypical which can convey a global message.”
Composers Ülo Krigul and Sander Mölder created an expanded acoustical space around the original works of Veljo Tormis, in order to use electronically processed sound to facilitate the transitions from the solos to massive choral textures.
