The cycle “Ingrian Evenings“ by Veljo Tormis (1930–2017) was performed at the concert “Tormis Remains” of the jazz festival Jazzkaar in 2018. The idea for the concert was born in collaboration between the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and the quartet Voorand-Koikson-Sooäär-Daniel. It is the word which takes centre stage in Tormis’ authentic and unique compositions based on the ancient folk songs of Estonian and other Finnic peoples. The magic of ancient rituals and the suggestiveness of the sounds in the composer’s music have become a source of endless inspiration for many Estonian and world choirs.
The central piece of the concert is the, by now classical, “Ingrian Evenings” from the choral cycle “Forgotten Peoples”. Next to the authentic performance by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, the quartet Voorand-Koikson-Sooäär-Daniel offers innovative magical solutions, which yet again demonstrates the timeless impact of Tormis’ rich body of work.
The broad repertoire of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir ranges from Baroque music to compositions of the 21st century, where Veljo Tormis’ works have a special place. This decades-long special relationship between the choir and the music of Veljo Tormis was born mostly thanks to conductor Tõnu Kaljuste, who brought the composer and the choir together. Throughout the years many remarkable concert programmes of Veljo Tormis’ music have been created, such as “Cycle of Tormis”, “Five Estonian Fairytales”, “Nativity Words”. Whenever the chamber choir is touring abroad, music by Tormis has been a welcome present, awaited and loved by audiences everywhere.
Online concert "Eyes of the Beholder" is the peak of the Estonian Music Days festival. ERSO, EPCC, soloists and conductor Mihhail Gerts will be performing contemporary music by Baltic composers.
With the concert "Beethoven & Kotzebue", we shed light on an exciting collaboration that took place more than 200 years ago.
