CHRISTMAS CAROLS
The conductor Tõnu Kaljuste: “Many years ago, in 1989, we released a cassette of Christmas songs by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir to help our friends get in the mood for Christmas. This programme presents the Estonian-language "Pirita Mass” alongside more traditional Christmas carols."
The composer Margo Kõlar: “The “Pirita Mass” was originally written as a monophonic setting for services at the Pirita Convent in Tallinn, Estonia. At Tõnu Kaljuste’s request, I adapted that setting into a concert work for choir, organ and symphony orchestra, which premiered during the “Kreek Days” festival at Haapsalu Cathedral in 2009. For this programme, I made a new version with chamber orchestra accompaniment.
The natural flow of the Estonian language was the fundamental starting-point for the writing of the “Pirita Mass”. I received a new translation of the liturgical text from Vello Salo, a priest and scholar at the Pirita Convent, who encouraged me to approach it creatively. The “Pirita Mass”, inspired by Father Vello, initiated a larger project to create genuinely Estonian church music, which has become my life-long work.
With a simple vocal line typical of congregational music, the “Pirita Mass” is accessible repertoire for most singers. In many performances, the audience has had the opportunity to follow the printed score and sing along.”
The concert was produced by EPCC and Tallinn Philharmonic Society.
The album is released with the same programme by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.
