AWAKENING (Ärkamine 2011) for mixed choir and chamber orchestra.
The year 2011 saw the world premiere of the cantata "Awakening" by Erkki-Sven Tüür (1959) for mixed choir and chamber orchestra, commissioned by Tallinn the European Capital of Culture and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.
According to its author, "Awakening" concentrates on the mystery of springtime rebirth. Erkki-Sven Tüür: „Awakening in the sense of waking from sleep, waking to a new life, dulled senses waking to new clarity, religious awakening, nature awakening in spring … The word has a broad and deep meaning. I believe that awakening is a lifelong process, the opposite of falling asleep and becoming vague and dim. It is the meeting place of somewhat pantheist, ancient Estonian and Christian senses“. The cantata is a setting of early 20th century (Juhan Liiv and Ernst Enno) and modern Estonian (Jaan Kaplinski ja Doris Kareva) poetry and liturgical Latin texts related to Easter.
In the video you can watch clips from rehearsals and listen to Erkki-Sven Tüür and conductor Daniel Reuss looking back on the birth process of the piece and its journey to the stage.
The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Sinfonietta Riga with conductor Daniel Reuss have recorded the cantata on the CD Awakening released by Ondine (2011).
Erkki-Sven Tüür has been shaping Estonia’s modern music landscape and the international music scene for almost four decades. It is the composer’s fantasy and ideas, their intense and witty development, and his search for answers to existential questions that fascinate the listener in Tüür’s music.
Tüür has so far composed nine symphonies, seven concertos for instruments, several major works for choir and orchestra, the opera "Wallenberg" based on the events of World War II and many other pieces that are treasured, performed and recorded more and more both in Estonia and abroad.
Online concert "Eyes of the Beholder" is the peak of the Estonian Music Days festival. ERSO, EPCC, soloists and conductor Mihhail Gerts will be performing contemporary music by Baltic composers.
With the concert "Beethoven & Kotzebue", we shed light on an exciting collaboration that took place more than 200 years ago.
